Signs and symptoms vary from person to person, but may include:
Feelings of sadness
Loss of interest in daily activities
Agitation or restlessness
Indecisiveness, distractibility and decreased concentration
Irritability or frustration
Insomnia or excessive sleeping
Changes in appetite
Fatigue, tiredness and/or a loss of energy
Reduced sex drive
Thoughts of suicide
Insomnia or nightmares
Feelings of hopelessness
Feeling this way may lead to all sorts of other things, such as drinking alcohol, taking drugs, spending money, acting out sexually, or co-dependent behaviors. These are all efforts to soothe the pain, or distract yourself from the underlying reasons that you feel depressed. That feeling of being stuck in depression and addictions is awful-- and you don't have to feel like that any longer.
Another way many people cope with the feelings of depression are to overeat, under eat, or binge and purge. Many people turn to food for comfort when feeling down and depressed; the challenge becomes when it seems to be getting out of control, and it is the way you cope rather than getting at the heart of the matter. But there is hope for this too, because a trained therapist can help you overcome this and get you on a path toward heath and wholeness.
Depression can creep up on anyone for a variety of reasons. Raising kids and all the day to day responsibilities of child rearing can lead to depression, leaving women feeling helpless and drained. If you are a stay at home mom, or a single mom, the pressures can be endless. Even if you love being a mom and wouldn't trade your kids for the world, you can still experience tremendous frustration and depletion. Feeling depressed, and at your wits end, can really take its toll after awhile, but you don't have to feel like that any longer. A skilled counselor can help support you through this challenging time, and provide an outlet where you can begin to feel better in the midst of chaos and an ever-demanding lifestyle. A therapist specializing in depression and anxiety can help you learn how to cope, and work with you in a way so that the depression lifts and you can begin to enjoy life more.
If you identify with any of the above life circumstances, and you want to feel better and live a more satisfying life, then therapy can help.
Because there is hope!
